GMAT Focus Edition scoring

The GMAT Focus Edition — the only version of the GMAT since early 2024 — has three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, each scored from 60 to 90. The total score runs from 205 to 805 in 10-point steps, and all three sections count equally. Scores are not comparable point-for-point with the old GMAT (200–800); a 655 on the Focus Edition sits at about the same percentile as a 700–710 on the old test.

What percentile do I need?

Percentiles show the share of recent test takers you outscored, based on GMAC's data for the past five years. Approximate benchmarks:

  • 555–565: around the 50th percentile.
  • 605–645: about the 70th–85th percentile — competitive for many good MBA programs.
  • 655–695: about the 90th–97th percentile — typical for top-20 programs.
  • 705+: 97th percentile and above — at or above the median of the most selective schools.

Schools also weigh work experience, essays and undergraduate GPA. Many accept the GRE too — compare with our GRE calculator.

Section scores matter too

Admissions committees look at your Quant, Verbal and Data Insights percentiles, not just the total, to make sure you can handle the quantitative MBA core. GMAC updates percentiles every August; we update this calculator as soon as new data is published.
