How to calculate a weighted grade
Most courses weight categories differently — for example homework 20%, quizzes 20%, midterm 25% and final exam 35%. Your grade is the weighted average:
Grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weights
If you have homework 88% (20%), quizzes 92% (20%) and midterm 79% (25%), your current grade is (88×20 + 92×20 + 79×25) ÷ 65 = 85.8%.
What do I need on my final?
The score you need on the final exam is:
Final needed = (Goal − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
where w is the final's weight as a decimal. With a current grade of 85.8%, a final worth 35% and a goal of 90%, you need (90 − 85.8 × 0.65) ÷ 0.35 = 97.8%. The calculator also shows what you need for each letter grade, so you know exactly where you stand.
If the required score is over 100%, the target isn't reachable through the final alone — check whether extra credit or dropped scores apply. If it is below 0%, you have already secured that grade.
Points-based classes
If your class uses total points instead of weights, enter each item's percentage score and use its share of total points as the weight (for example, a 50-point quiz in a 500-point course has a 10% weight).
