How SAT and ACT scores compare
The SAT is scored from 400 to 1600 (two sections, Reading and Writing plus Math, each 200–800). The ACT composite is scored from 1 to 36. Because the tests are different, ACT and College Board publish official concordance tables that show which scores reflect similar performance. Colleges use them to compare applicants who took different tests — and so does this calculator.

The digital SAT
Since 2024 the SAT is fully digital and adaptive in the U.S. and Canada: each section has two modules, and the difficulty of the second module depends on how you did on the first. It takes about 2 hours 14 minutes. Because scoring is adaptive, there is no fixed "raw score to scaled score" chart; College Board reports your section scores and total directly.
Which test should I take?
- Take a full practice test of each and compare your results with the chart above.
- The SAT gives more time per question; the ACT is faster-paced but science is now optional.
- Virtually all U.S. colleges accept either test equally. Check whether your target schools are test-optional, test-required or test-blind.
