Missouri sales tax rate 2026

The statewide sales tax rate in Missouri is 4.225%. Cities and counties can add local taxes, bringing the average combined rate to about 8.39%. Your exact rate depends on the address where you buy (or where goods are delivered).

How to calculate sales tax

To add sales tax, multiply the price by the tax rate and add it to the price: Total = Price × (1 + rate). For example, a $100 purchase with 8.25% tax costs $108.25. To find the pre-tax price from a receipt total, divide instead: Price = Total ÷ (1 + rate). This calculator does both — choose "Including tax" to work backwards.

U.S. sales tax: state plus local

Forty-five states and the District of Columbia charge a statewide sales tax, from 2.9% in Colorado to 7.25% in California. Most states also allow cities, counties and special districts to add local sales taxes, so the rate you actually pay depends on your exact address. When you select a state, the calculator fills in the average combined state and local rate; you can edit it to match your local rate. Five states — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon — have no statewide sales tax (Alaska allows local sales taxes).

In Canada, prices on shelves are usually shown before tax, so the amount at the register is higher than the sticker price. In most provinces with separate PST, the provincial tax is calculated on the price before GST.

What is taxable?

Rules vary. Many U.S. states exempt groceries and prescription drugs or tax them at reduced rates; clothing is exempt in a few states such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Minnesota. In Canada, basic groceries, prescription drugs and many medical devices are zero-rated for GST/HST. Check with your state or provincial revenue agency for specific items.

Sales tax on online purchases

Since the U.S. Supreme Court's 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair decision, online retailers collect sales tax in nearly every state that has one. In Canada, non-resident digital platforms must also register for and collect GST/HST.

Frequently asked questions

Which state has the highest sales tax?
California has the highest statewide base rate at 7.25%. Including local taxes, Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas and Washington have some of the highest average combined rates, around 9.5% or more.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Some Alaska municipalities levy local sales taxes.
What is the HST in Ontario?
Ontario's harmonized sales tax is 13%: 5% federal GST plus 8% provincial portion.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. For a $113 total in Ontario: $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, so $13 is tax.
