$32 an hour is how much a year?
If you make $32 an hour and work 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, your yearly salary is $66,560 before taxes. That works out to about $5,547 a month, $2,560 every two weeks, $1,280 a week and $256 a day.
| Pay period | Before tax |
|---|---|
| Year (2,080 hours) | $66,560 |
| Month | $5,547 |
| Every two weeks | $2,560 |
| Week (40 hours) | $1,280 |
| Day (8 hours) | $256 |
Working part time, 30 hours a week, the same wage pays $49,920 a year. If you take two weeks off unpaid, a full-time year comes to $64,000. Overtime at time and a half pays $48.00 an hour.
$32 an hour after taxes
After 2026 federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, a single filer earning $66,560 takes home about $55,655 a year ($4,638 a month) in a state with no income tax, such as Texas or Florida. State income tax lowers that elsewhere:
| State | Take-home per year | Per month | Per hour after tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | $55,655 | $4,638 | $26.76 |
| Florida | $55,655 | $4,638 | $26.76 |
| California | $53,542 | $4,462 | $25.74 |
| New York | $52,658 | $4,388 | $25.32 |
| Illinois | $52,505 | $4,375 | $25.24 |
| Pennsylvania | $53,612 | $4,468 | $25.77 |
| Ohio | $54,607 | $4,551 | $26.25 |
| North Carolina | $53,508 | $4,459 | $25.72 |
Single filer, standard deduction, no 401(k) or pre-tax benefits, no local income tax. Use the calculator above or the state paycheck calculators for your exact situation.
That is 4.4 times the federal minimum wage of $7.25. Your top federal tax bracket at this income is 22% (single filer), so each extra dollar you earn is taxed at that rate, plus 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare.

How to convert salary to hourly
The standard full-time work year is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). To convert an annual salary to an hourly rate, divide the salary by 2,080. A quick shortcut: divide the salary by 2,000 — $60,000 a year is roughly $30 an hour (exactly $28.85).
To convert hourly to annual, multiply by 2,080: $25 an hour is $52,000 a year. Another shortcut is to double the hourly wage and add three zeros — $25 → $50,000 — which slightly underestimates.
Common conversions (40 hours a week)
| Hourly | Weekly | Monthly | Annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15 | $600 | $2,600 | $31,200 |
| $20 | $800 | $3,467 | $41,600 |
| $25 | $1,000 | $4,333 | $52,000 |
| $30 | $1,200 | $5,200 | $62,400 |
| $40 | $1,600 | $6,933 | $83,200 |
| $50 | $2,000 | $8,667 | $104,000 |
Salaried vs. hourly: what to compare
When comparing a salaried offer with an hourly job, look beyond the rate:
- Overtime. Under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees must be paid 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Many salaried employees are exempt and earn no overtime. In Canada, overtime rules are set by each province (often after 40 or 44 hours).
- Paid time off. Salaried jobs often include paid vacation and holidays; hourly jobs may not. Enter unpaid weeks above to see the real annual income.
- Benefits. Health insurance, retirement matching and bonuses can be worth 20%–30% of base pay.
- Actual hours. If a salaried job routinely requires 50 hours a week, your effective hourly rate is lower — change "Hours per week" to see it.
From gross to take-home pay
These figures are gross (before tax). To see what you actually take home after federal, state or provincial taxes, use our U.S. paycheck calculator or the Canada income tax calculator.
Worked examples
- $60,000 a year at 40 hours a week: 60,000 ÷ 2,080 hours = $28.85 an hour.
- $25 an hour at 40 hours a week: 25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year.
- $60,000 at 37.5 hours a week (a common schedule in Canada): 60,000 ÷ 1,950 hours = $30.77 an hour.
Paid time off changes your real hourly rate
The standard 2,080-hour year assumes you are paid for every weekday, including vacation and holidays. If you get three weeks of vacation (120 hours) and 10 paid holidays (80 hours), you actually work about 1,880 hours. A $60,000 salary is then worth 60,000 ÷ 1,880 = $31.91 for each hour you work. This matters when you compare a salaried offer with an hourly job that does not pay for time off.
Unpaid overtime lowers it
The reverse is also true. If a $60,000 salaried job regularly takes 50 hours a week, you work 2,600 hours a year and earn about $23.08 an hour. In the U.S., salaried employees classified as exempt under federal law do not receive overtime; the federal salary threshold for exemption is $684 a week ($35,568 a year), and several states such as California, New York and Washington set higher thresholds. Employees below the threshold are generally owed time-and-a-half after 40 hours. In Canada, overtime rules are set by each province, and many salaried managers are excluded.
